Face It Girl April 2010: Kara Hurston

April 7th, 2010 by Jenn Marquez

1. Why did you decide to become a hair stylist and how long have u been doing it for?
I actually never thought I would become a hairstylist. My friends were always the ones doing my hair and never had an interest. When I was young I got a brush stuck in my friends bangs and we had to cut them all off. I have always loved art such as drawing, painting, sculpting, etc. so when my dad suggested hair school I thought it would just be another form of art. I went and loved it and never looked back, it’s been about 5 years now.

2. Do you love it or sometimes wish you were doing something else? Why?
I do love it and if I was to do anything else it would either have to be something involving fashion possibly with fashion shows and behind the scene work.

3. Worst client story? What made it so?
I don’t have a worst client story I’ve been pretty lucky but I definitely have the clients that like to move their heads around a lot and have to look in the mirror every 2 seconds to touch their hair. Let me finish and then you can see it. Big pet peeve!

4. People you are most proud of to have styled?
I have styled Cheryl Tiegs hair. She was an iconic 1970s pop culture image. Amazing woman!

5. When you’re out and about do you look at people’s hair and critique their style and/or think “what were you thinking about!”?
Of course when I first meet someone or see someone walking down the street I critique their hair and picture something that i would do instead. Its just become a habit. My clients ask me all the time what I would do and they trust my opinion which is great.

6. One product that is a must have?
I couldn’t really pick one product but for someone with short hair that is looking for good texture then it would be Kevin Murphy’s “gritty business”, curly hair I love Bumble and Bumble “surf spray” for that just got out of the ocean look, and for someone with longer hair Oribe “royal blowout” just to give it nice shine and protection.

7. Something about you no one would know?
Something most people don’t know about me is that I’ve played soccer pretty much since I could walk.

8. Something you can’t live with out?
Things I can’t live without are a flat iron, my studded high heels, a good vintage t shirt, mac and cheese, comedies and English breakfast tea.

9. What tunes get you all geared up to have a kick-ass day at work?
I love La Roux, Greg Laswell, Minus The Bear and of course David Guetta. My favorite song right now would have to be Dirty Talk by Wynter Gordon.

10. What are the worst and best hair trends right now?The worst trend is still the longer in the front shorter in the back bob. I’m over it!! I get at least 3 people a day that want it and i think its over done. Best trends right now is some good bangs that are blunt or a lot of good texture through out. Have fun with it.
